You may have heard that all of the best things to do in Skiathos revolve around the fact that there you can find some of the most magnificent white-sand beaches in the Aegean. Indeed. While in Skiathos, you should visit Koukounaries Beach, which is a protected nature reserve.
If, however, you are interested in sightseeing, Evangelistria Monastery, founded in the 18th century, occupies a steep hillside around 5 km above Skiathos Town. Surrounded by pine forests, the building has several chapels filled with vivid and colorful frescoes. The building was a refuge for soldiers during the War of Independence.
The beautiful natural port with its marina and Bourtzi, a small pine-clad peninsula dominating the bay, are the first images that will catch your eye. The modern town Hora is quaint, with red-roof-tiled houses, narrow alleyways and a lovely seaside promenade filled with cafes and bars. Ιts most important site is Kastro, a natural fortress which during the 14th century was strengthened with high walls and canons, to protect the old town from pirates.
Local transport covers only the southern part of the island, so, car rental or taxi transfers are the ideal solution for independency and flexibility. Leaving the town and heading south-southwest, a series of spotless beaches line the one next to the other: Big Banana [organized, with sunbeds and water sports], Small Banana [quiet and secluded] and finally, the landmark of Skiathos, Koukounaries, an amazing beach next to a mountainous pine forest and a tree-lined lagoon, Lake Strofilia, home to local and migratory birds. The amazing 1,5-km-long golden sandy beach, also called Gold beach/ Chryssi Ammos, is spotless and organised, protected under strict laws.
Driving north along the pine- filled landscape, you will be amazed by the natural beauty. On this part of the island, don’t miss a swim in small and big Asselinos, two fantastic beaches with thick sand and pebbles, the first calm and quiet and the latter more organized and popular. Once on the north part of the island, make a stop at Xanemos beach, not only for a swim but also to try horse-riding on the beach!
